Abstract:
FORTRA (Forest Traceability) is a digital tool promoted by the Xunta de Galicia that is made available to forest companies and consumers with the aim of providing traceability to products derived from wood, recording the operations carried out by all the companies that form part of the process. transformation, from the forest to what reaches the market.
For companies, it allows building a network to digitally connect the entire value chain of the Galician wood sector, so that they can inform customers and consumers of the characteristics of their wooden products, including their carbon footprint, as well as the forest from which they come and the operations that were necessary for their elaboration.
With the FORTRA project, Xunta de Galicia intends to promote the use of local products (made and manufactured in Galicia), as well as responsible purchases (products with low or no carbon footprint) and respectful of the environment (legal origin, obligation to regenerate after logging or forest certification).
In addition, the tool includes a public, transparent and reliable traceability system through the use of blockchain technology, which tracks all the transformation steps of the product, from the origin (forest), to the final product for sale. In this way, the products receive transparency and credibility, presenting to customers as local (km 0), with a low or even negative carbon footprint, deforestation free, under sustainable forest management parameters, and certified (PEFC / FSC) if that's the case. FORTRA already calculates the carbon footprint of the product
The tool can be used by any company that manufactures wood products.
To start using it, it is necessary to download and install a simple application for Windows that is used to send the traceability data of each batch and its operations, it is also compatible with macOS and Linux operating systems.
